NASS clears JAMB of alleged misappropriation

The National Assembly Joint Committee on Finance has exonerated the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), of  alleged misappropriation of funds in its 2024 budget implementation.

Chairman of the committee, Sen . Sani Musa in a statement on Thursday,  said the board was erroneously accused of reckless spendings, given the documents submitted to the committee by JAMB.

He said the committee had during the budget defence session with the Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede , alleged that the examination body spent N1.1 billion on meals , N850 million for fumigation among others.

Sani said the JAMB Registrar had made efforts to explain how the alleged expenditure were made but was overruled by the committee, adding that the committee requested that JAMB presented it with details of its budgetary appropriation and spendings in 2024 and 2025.

Sani in the statement said: “For the purpose of clarity, the comprehensive report provided by JAMB indicated that the line items mentioned during Monday’s hearing on revenue did not suggest any mismanagement or misuse of the board’s funds.

“On the contrary, the report highlighted the responsible and prudent use of resources under the leadership of the registrar.

“The registrar  deserves commendation for demonstrating financial discipline and accountability in managing the board’s resources effectively.

“This level of stewardship serves as a model for public institutions across the nation.”

FG knocks Emir Sanusi over unconstructive remarks on laudable policies

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, says the Federal Government does not need the stamp of approval from Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II of its laudable policies that is making life better for Nigerians.

This is contained in a statement  by the minister on Thursday in Abuja.

According to the minister, Sanusi, like any other Nigerian,  has the inalienable right to express opinions either in form of commendation or criticism on how the government is being ran.

“However, we find it amusing that a leader, more so, one from an institution that ennobles forthrightness, fairness, and justice would  publicly admit to shuffling off saying the truth because of personal interest hinged on imaginary antagonism.

“It is pertinent to state that Nigeria is at a pivotal juncture where bold and decisive actions are necessary to tackle entrenched economic challenges.

“This administration has implemented transformative reforms, not because they are easy but because they are essential for securing Nigeria’s long-term stability and growth, as he,  Sanusi had consistently advocated.

“The temporary pains currently experienced from these inevitable decisions, as Sanusi himself acknowledged, are necessary consequence of decades of irresponsible economic management,  more than anything else.

“These reforms are already delivering measurable progress. The unification of exchange rates has bolstered investor confidence, which has contributed to increased foreign reserves and strengthened Nigeria’s ability to shield itself from external economic shocks.

“The removal of the fuel subsidy has freed up significant resources, allowing for greater investment in critical sectors such as infrastructure, education, and healthcare.”

The minister expressed  disappointment, that reforms,  widely recognised as essential by global experts including  Sanusi himself, are now being subtly condemned because of shift in loyalty.

Idris stressed that Sanusi has a unique responsibility to contribute constructively rather than undermine reforms aimed at collective progress.

“We urge the Emir to rise above personal interests and partisan undertones and prioritise the greater good of Nigerians.

“Rebuilding Nigeria requires unity, focus, and sacrifice from all stakeholders. As a government, we urge esteemed leaders to refrain from rhetorics that undermine public trust.

“Instead,  they owe it a duty to champion the collective goal of a prosperous Nigeria. This is a critical time for our country, what is needed is collaboration, not unnecessary distractions

“President Bola Tinubu’s administration remains resolute in its mission to lead Nigeria toward economic inclusivity, sustainability, and shared prosperity.

“This administration is open to constructive dialogue with all well-meaning stakeholders, while remaining steadfast in putting the interests of Nigerians above all else,” Idris said.

Seyi Tinubu: An Inspiring Tale of a ‘Good Samaritan’

For the want of a perfect description, Oluwaseyi Afolabi Tinubu known by the sobriquet ST emerges as a deeply misunderstood individual. Those who truly know him understand that his essence transcends the negative narratives often propagated by naysayers. All his life, he has faced a backlash on his way to the top. Some ascribe his growth to ‘the name of the Father’ while some say his father’s deep pocket helped him become a household name but these narratives frequently become politicized, especially given his status as a successful businessman, vibrant socialite, and now as the son of the President of Nigeria. Yet, beneath this facade, Seyi embodies the spirit of the biblical Good Samaritan, finding genuine joy in uplifting those around him with much gusto.

While some criticize his philanthropic efforts, mistakenly attributing them to his wealth and status, Seyi is fundamentally driven by a deep-seated sense of humanity. He believes that our shared humanity should guide our actions, particularly in showing compassion to those in distress. Generosity is woven into the fabric of his life, a virtue instilled in him by his father, who is renowned for his charitable spirit. Though he is not without flaws—recognizing that he is, after all, human—Seyi aspires toward self-improvement, much like a fine wine that matures over time.

Those who understand his background often assume that he could easily rely on his affluent upbringing and avoid hard work just like the route many of his peers often thread. However, Seyi defies this stereotype, fully aware of the value of diligence, hard work and perseverance. While some may presume he should rest on the laurels of his father’s wealth, he chooses instead to pursue meaningful work. His investments, particularly in the outdoor advertising sector through his company, Loatsad Promo Media, are testimonies to his strong work ethic and commitment to self-made success. It is important to remember that he, too, is prone to making mistakes, as all humans are. However, he makes it a habit to reflect on his past experiences, seeking to learn and grow from them. Driven by his passion and emotions, Seyi is also a receptive and humble listener, always willing to reconsider his views in light of superior arguments.

A team player at heart, Seyi epitomizes the spirit of collaboration, believing firmly that collective effort is the key to achieving shared goals. His approach to work is devoid of greed and jealousy; instead, he encourages those around him to pursue their successes, fostering an environment of mutual growth. This open-handedness distinguishes him and reinforces his reputation as a catalyst for the success of numerous individuals who could be the future leaders of society.

Seyi is not motivated by personal enrichment; rather, he harbours a profound passion for nurturing generations of upright individuals capable of rising from humble beginnings to achieve their full potential. He continually emphasizes the importance of loyalty, teaching those he mentors that success involves uplifting others along the way. For him, this reciprocal act of kindness is pivotal to fostering a brighter future filled with principled leaders. Although he is not divine and detests being hailed as such, it is undeniable that the impact of his contributions remains significant yet often underreported. He shies away from the media limelight, yet his name resonates positively when mentioned.

Loyalty and truthfulness are values he holds dear. Many who fail to meet these standards quickly find themselves sidelined, illustrating how crucial these traits are to him. Those who demonstrate loyalty are rewarded generously, further solidifying his reputation as someone who genuinely cares for those within his circle. Whether admired or scorned, Seyi has proven to be remarkably consistent in believing in the potential of others, often going above and beyond to ensure their well-being.

For those who view him through a prejudicial lens, it is essential to realize that Seyi lives his life in service to others. He does not require a personal connection with someone to make a positive impact on their life. His close friends often find themselves in key leadership positions, empowering them to aid even more people. Despite the many good deeds he has performed, Seyi has frequently faced betrayal from those closest to him. However, he approaches these betrayals with a measure of emotional resilience, recognizing them as an inherent part of life. This reality has not deterred him from his mission to foster independence among those around him; in fact, it has only strengthened his resolve and led him to expand his philanthropic outreach.

Known widely as a “destiny helper,” Seyi has a remarkable ability to uplift those who seek his assistance. He has inherited his father’s generosity, which, while making him vulnerable to exploitation, has also equipped him with a profound capacity for forgiveness. Eschewing passivity, Seyi actively engages with his community and leads from the forefront, earning him the moniker “King of Boys.” In the context of Nigeria’s youth demographic, he has willingly sacrificed his privacy, comfort, and luxuries to ensure that young people are a central focus of his developmental agenda, closely aligned with his father’s vision for the country. While critics have recently cast doubts on his involvement in federal governance, Seyi remains steadfast in his commitment to the cause, embodying resilience and determination to make a lasting impact.

In recent times, there has been a significant call for ST to consider running for the Lagos gubernatorial seat. As this momentum continues to build, he has chosen not to directly address the persistent rumours surrounding his potential candidacy. Instead, ST remains dedicated to his mission of fostering innovation and promoting youth inclusiveness within governance. He believes that the future of the government rests on the shoulders of the younger generation, whose fresh ideas and innovative approaches can drive the nation toward greater excellence.

Despite the mixed reactions from the public—some wholeheartedly supporting the idea of his candidacy while others express their dissent—there is a consensus that ST possesses the necessary qualities to lead a diverse and dynamic city like Lagos. His extensive travel experiences have given him a broad perspective, while his educational background equips him with the knowledge required for effective governance. Moreover, ST is known for his innovative mindset, intelligence, and respectful demeanour, qualities that endear him to many.

What stands out most is his remarkable ability to remain calm and collected amid the often turbulent waters of Lagos state politics. This composure is crucial for navigating the complexities of leadership in such a metropolitan environment. As he continues to focus on empowering and developing the youth, ST builds a strong foundation for potentially stepping into a leadership role that aligns with the aspirations of Lagos’s residents.

Gov Ododo stops Tax clearance as requirement for students

Gov. Ahmed Ododo of Kogi on Wednesday directed the stoppage of Tax Clearance Certificate (TCC) as prerequisite for students’ registration into tertiary institutions.

Alhaji Sule Enehe, Chairman, Kogi State Revenue Services (KGSIR), made the disclosure in a press conference held in Lokoja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Kogi government had on, Jan. 8, declared that the presentation of parents’ Tax Clearance Certificate (TCC), was a mandatory condition for admission into tertiary institutions.

The said policy, which he claimed, was ongoing for the past two years at the Prince Abubakar Audu University, Ayingba and others was aimed at shoring up the revenue profile of the state to run government and provide social amenities to citizens.

The policy had also generated some controversy with some public and civil society organisations faulting it as an infringement of children’s fundamental rights to education.

Enehe, however, pointed out that the stoppage of the usage of the presentation of parents/guardians tax clearance certificate at the point of registration into tertiary institutions was sequel to public outcry.

“With this directive of the governor, no student should be denied registration into tertiary institution on the ground of non presentation of parents/guardians TCC.

“Again, it is still mandatory for every parent to pay his/her personal income tax and collect his/her tax clearance certificate as provided for by the Nigerian constitution.

“This is because their wards might not enjoy some privileges such as bursary allowance and others at some point while in their various institutions of learning, ” he said.

On illegal tax collection by some unknown persons who block the highway, he said the service had clamped down on them and had arrested several with 43 people being prosecuted.

According to him, the service will not rest on its oars at giving such saboteurs no room to defraud the state nor rob innocent citizens of their hard earned monies.

Enehe disclosed that the service was targeting collection of N35.1 billion as revenue in 2025 having raked in N27.7 billion in 2024.

He said that the service had deployed modern technology to ease payment of taxes by business owners and individuals all in the aim to shore up the revenue base of the state.

CBN sanctions 9 banks for failing to dispense cash via ATMs

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) says it has sanctioned some Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) for failing to make Naira notes available through automated teller machines (ATMs), during the yuletide season.

According to a statement by Hakama Sidi-Ali, CBN’s Director, Corporate Communications Department, this is a clear message of zero tolerance for cash flow disruptions.

The affected banks are Fidelity Bank Plc, First Bank Plc, Keystone Bank Plc,
Union Bank Plc, Globus Bank Plc, Providus Bank Plc, Zenith Bank Plc, United Bank for Africa Plc, and Sterling Bank Plc.

Sidi-Ali said that each of the banks was fined N150 million for non-compliance, in line with the CBN’s cash distribution guidelines, following spot checks on their branches.

She said that the enforcement
action followed repeated warnings from the CBN to financial institutions to guarantee seamless cash availability, particularly during periods of high demand.

“Communication with the banks revealed that the fines would be debited directly from their accounts with the apex bank.

“Ensuring seamless cash flow is paramount to maintaining public trust and economic stability.

“The CBN will not hesitate to impose further sanctions on any institution found violating its cash circulation guidelines,” she said.

She said the CBN’s investigations and monitoring would continue to scrutinise cash hoarding and rationing, both at bank branches and by Point-of-Sale (POS) operators.

She added that the CBN was working with security agencies to crack down on illegal cash sales and operational violations, including enforcing POS operators’ daily cumulative withdrawal limit of N1.2 million.

She urged all financial institutions to comply with its guidelines, warning that further violations would attract swift and decisive sanctions.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the CBN Governor, Yemi Cardoso, had earlier warned banks to strictly adhere to cash distribution policies or face severe penalties.

Cardoso gave the warning in his address at the Annual Bankers’ Dinner of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) in Nov., 2024.

He underscored the apex bank’s commitment to maintaining a robust cash buffer to meet the need of Nigerians.

“Our focus remains on fostering trust, ensuring stability, and guaranteeing seamless cash circulation across the financial system,” Cardoso had said.
